Kahk for a Cause

Ramadan in the Time of Coronavirus

Ramadan in the time of coronavirus feels different from any other Ramadan we’ve celebrated in our lifetimes. We remember massive family gatherings in crowded kitchens steaming with food, nighttime festivities, with the matfaa el iftar cannons booming in the distance. Instead, this year we find ourselves resorting to virtual tools to connect with friends and loved ones. And yet, in the middle of social distancing, rushing home for curfew, it’s even more important to remember the true heart and spirit behind Ramadan. This is a time for spiritual reflection, purification, worship, and helping others.

Baking a Difference

This year, in celebration of Ramadan and also in the wake of COVID-19, Breadfast is “baking” a difference . For every box of our legendary kahk sold, 5% will be donated to the Ahl Masr Foundation. We’re helping Egyptians celebrate Ramadan safely and fight the Coronavirus crisis at the same time. And trust me, if you haven’t tried our perfectly powdered kahk sweets, you’re missing out on the best kahk ever! (Click here for our secret ingredient.)

A portion of our kahk proceeds will help Ahl Masr Foundation refurbish and equip their buildings to become COVID-19 isolation wards. Originally, the Ahl Masr Foundation was a hospital that treated burn patients. However, given the current Coronavirus crisis, it is working with the Ministry of Health to convert their buildings. The foundation will also be providing essential equipment such as ventilators, CT scans, bedside monitors, and syringe pumps.

The Heart of Ramadan

There will always be a reason to celebrate Ramadan and help each other. The holy month has survived through every war, famine, drought, revolution, and pandemic. Just because many of our traditions have shifted or been put on hold, Ramadan is still about coming together. Challenge yourself to think about how you can give to others who are most affected by the coronavirus, whether it’s our hospital, healthcare workers, or those who are going hungry because of a suffering economy. In times like these, we rely on each other’s generosity more than ever. Even if you don’t choose to give through Breadfast, that’s still great! But honestly, why pass up the chance to taste the “best kahk in town,” when it also contributes to the fight against COVID-19?

Ramadan Kareem everyone! The sun will rise, each day brighter than the last.
