Immune Boosters for a Healthy Body

Keep your guard up!

There’s a lot that goes into running the intricate system of organs, cells, and proteins – our immune system. A strong immune system means that our body is better equipped to create antibodies to fight harmful substances like germs, fungi, and viruses (antigens). We’re also better protected from potential attacks on our body that could make us sick. When it comes to boosting your immune system, the ingredients that you’ll want to keep around in your kitchen are foods rich in Vitamin C, D, A, B6, E, and zinc – commonly found in fresh fruits and vegetables

Other elements, like Vitamin B12, Selenium, Manganese, and Magnesium are also important to keep your immune system running properly. These are more common in dairy and meat-based foods (who knew canned tuna had such an insane amount of nutrients?)

Breaking down their roles

Vitamin C

Probably the most popular immune system supplement, Vitamin C boosts your immune system by increasing the production of white blood cells. It’s also an antioxidant which protects your immune system from harmful substances.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D decreases inflammation, and enhances the fighting effects of white blood cells. These are crucial in your immune system to fight infections.

Vitamin E

This supplement is a powerful antioxidant that helps your body fight off infection. However, it’s important to note that most health experts advise specifically against taking Vitamin E supplements. Your better bet is eating Vitamin E – rich foods instead.

Vitamin A

Vitamin A is another vitamin that is important for the maintenance of the immune system and correct regulation of immune system cells.

B Vitamins

There are a variety of B Vitamins, which is why you’ll often find supplements sold as “B6” “B12” or “B-complex.” These help support biochemical reactions in your immune system, and helps boost other brain and energy functions.

Zinc

Zinc is often another popular go-to for an immune boost. This mineral helps with immune cell development, and also plays an important role in our body’s inflammatory response.

Selenium

Selenium is an antioxidant that lowers oxidative stress in your body, reducing inflammation and enhancing your immune system.

Manganese

A mineral that plays a crucial role in fighting and reducing bacterial infection. It helps your body utilize and properly metabolize nutrients like Vitamin C and E.

Magnesium

Magnesium is an essential mineral for your nutrition that strengthens your immune system and supports other body functions.

Setting your body up for victory

In addition to eating healthy foods, drinking warm drinks such as green tea and honey can also have soothing effects on a cough or sore throat. As a bonus, it also gives you a mild boost of Vitamin C and antioxidants. If you do take vitamin and mineral supplements, make sure you’re only taking the recommended amount – exceeding the recommended dose can have negative effects on your health. In general, health experts agree that the best way for our body to absorb the proper amount of minerals and vitamins is through food.

There is little scientific evidence that supplements can prevent or shorten any illness – and it won’t be able to protect against more aggressive viruses like the Coronavirus. The best way to stay safe is to practice proper hygiene habits, and social distancing as much as you can. Nevertheless, eating healthy and maintaining a strong immune system is, and always will be an important component to being the healthiest and strongest version of yourself.  Get your personal stock of immune boosters delivered here.
